Encounters with Restorative Practices presents stories of restorative practitioners in Central America and the Dominican Republic who addressed a variety of situations using restorative practices to transform the lives of people. In “Restorative practices and art in a community forbidden from speaking”, Carlos Smith writes about the use of circles to address some very difficult situations with youth-at-risk participating in a program to offer modern dance to children and youth in Panama. In “A School that laughs, learns and dreams”, Gabriela Pérez writes about implementing restorative practices in Los Arbolitos school in the Dominican Republic to improve discipline and change behaviors of very angry students. In “Trip with no return to a world with circles”, Flor García writes about her discovery of restorative practices and circles and how they changed the way she lives and works in Guatemala. In “Following the way of restoration”, Lorena Coy writes about her discovery of restorative practices and how she implemented them in schools and communities in Guatemala. In “Circles in the mountains”, Miguel Tello writes about his experience taking a group of NGO leaders into the mountains of Costa Rica and using circles to strengthen community and wellbeing among leaders. In “Among sunflowers and butterflies”, Aracely Chajón shares her experience using circles to deal with the pandemic in her organization and community in Guatemala, and how circles helped to strengthen their team. In “Being restorative in the worst of times”, Natalie Medina shares her experience using circles with other parents in Panama with children in the ICU and how circles helped her to deal with the loss of her infant son. In “My best failures”, Miguel Tello shares his experience of 2 circles that did not work as expected and what he learned from these failures. And in “Stories as encounters”, Jennifer Coreas writes about her experience in the I am an Author program with young inmates in El Salvador and how the process of writing becomes a restorative way of dealing with their personal stories.
